As many of you are aware we are in the midst of “Flu Season” as it is valid to say there is much to be concerned about for those with lowered immune responses it’s important to illustrate the reasons why so many people have a lowered immune response this time of year.

First and foremost we are in the winter months and that means no sunlight, which is the most integral part of the human body’s production of Vitamin D. The most bio-available (usable by the body) form of Vitamin D is the form we make on our own when our skin is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D is crucial in immune system function and plays a major role in fighting off the flu virus.  Along with this Vitamin D is a hormone that can affect mood and overall energy levels. In January and February many people have been without enough Vitamin D synthesis to the extent their energy levels are low and they find themselves lacking the energy to get out and get active leading to less exercise and instead reside to staying in when possible and turning to another detrimental action on their immune system function…COMFORT FOODS. These are foods that are rampant during the holiday season but are basically high in simple sugar (not the kind in fruit and vegetables) and create a short feeling of happiness when we are down due to the increased blood sugar levels that immediately follow consumption.  

What you may or may not know is that sugar has a paralyzing effect on the immune system and studies have shown simple sugar consumption deactivates the immune system for up to 5 hours. Really think about that and the fact that if you consume simple sugar not once but perhaps 3 times (maybe 3 Christmas cookies spread out throughout the day, sugar in coffee, a granola bar, dessert after dinner, etc) a day you may have lowered you body’s ability to defend itself from viral and bacterial pathogens via simple sugar’s inhibitory effects on white blood cells for up to 15 hours. That is a long time to be without optimal immune function. You can see this pattern of bad weather and poor food choices creating a vicious cycle or perfect storm if you will for lowered immune response.  Another consequence of this pattern is dehydration; hopefully we are all aware how crucial it is to stay hydrated and not just during the summer months.  Water is the most essential element needed for the body to detoxify. We won’t go too much into this but if you would like to discuss it further just ask us.

So what can you do to stay healthy during this time and prevent the flu and how can Greenwich Wellness help?

With the CDC itself seeming to yearly admit that the shot is not as effective as they tout it to be in hindsight,  it’s important for us all to know that a truly healthy immune system is the best method to avoid getting sick and that is done naturally with a healthy lifestyle and healthcare the way nature intended.
